Top 5 Traditional Hair Loss Treatments That May Fade Out

Traditional Hair Loss Treatments Are a Dying Breed

When you think of hair loss treatments, some of the first things that may come to mind are topical creams and oral medications. Up until recently, products that contain minoxidil (oral and topical) and finasteride (oral) have been go-to solutions for balding and thinning. However, many are opting for new technologies that offer more natural hair loss treatments. As the availability of new hair enhancement technologies increases, traditional hair regrowth treatments may become a thing of the past. Here are the top 5 reasons why traditional hair loss treatments may fade out.

1. Impotence

Unfortunately, finasteride hair loss treatments like propecia can cause difficulties in the bedroom. The top side effects of finasteride include impotence, loss of interest in sex, trouble having an orgasm, as well as abnormal ejaculation. Sometimes, but not always, these issues can still continue even after stopping medication usage. Intercourse troubles could potentially be just a given with aging and that may be enhanced by the medication, but it is best to speak with a provider if this is a concern.

2. High Maintenance

Minoxidil (products like Rogaine and Bosley treatments) aren’t a quick fix. Once started, the user must be in for the long-term if he wants to see results. Minoxidil hair loss treatments “only work as long as they are used diligently and routinely,” meaning that hair growth will cease once the treatment is stopped. When using minoxidil, it must be applied twice daily, hair must not be be washed for at least 4 hours after application, and drying times can take between 2-4 hours. Although it isn’t running a marathon, this can be more work than desired for some people. [1]

3. Skin Irritation

While some may feel comfortable using creams or foams used as hair loss treatments, some may have scalp irritation. According to LIVESTRONG, minor “stinging may occur,” and inflammation with redness may develop, which could be a type of mild allergic reaction called contact dermatitis.” Keep in mind, this is only mild and should pose no danger if prescribed or suggested by an accredited physician. Developing dandruff can also be a side effect of minoxidil use.

4. Systemic Problems

Minoxidil products and finasteride can both agitate underlying systemic problems such as cardiovascular and vision problems, as well as headaches namely if one already has pre-existing heart/vision problems. According to drugs.com, “patients with underlying heart disease may be at increased risk for these or other cardiovascular adverse effects.” Again, always consult with a doctor when starting any new physical treatment- this also goes for hair loss treatments.

5. Natural Is The New “Thing”

If a doctor does not recommend using traditional hair loss treatments, they may suggest a patient to go with alternative or natural remedies. Luckily, we are in a time that is quickly producing state-of-the-art technologies that have shown to potentially produce great results. It is entirely possible for your hair follicles to become reactivated through new revolutionary procedures that utilize the body’s own healing abilities. Both platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy as well as stromal vascular fraction (SVF) are autologous procedures that are expected to work by exploiting growth factors in the PRP and SVF and re-administering the final product back into the scalp. There is no risk factor of rejection or infection, because these materials are from one’s own body, thus making this minimally-invasive procedure incredibly safe with no systemic side-effects.

What Happened to My Hair!?: 5 Possible Causes of Female Hair Loss

Female hair loss is rarely talked about, but is rapidly gaining more awareness. Many assume that significant hair loss and thinning is exclusive to men. However, medical professionals will tell you otherwise. In fact, “by age 50, nearly fifty percent of women experience Female Pattern Hair Loss, according to the North American Hair Research Society”.

Unlike male pattern hair loss, the cause of female pattern hair loss is far from obvious. There could be several reasons––even combinations of reasons––as to why a woman may start losing her hair. That is why it is important for medical professionals––like the ones at Regeneris Medical––to find the root cause of the hair loss in order to maximize the effectiveness of treatment.

Get to the Root of the Hair Problem

1. Androgenetic Alopecia

Androgenetic alopecia is the number one cause of hair loss in both women and men. “In women, androgenetic alopecia begins with gradual thinning at the part line, followed by increasing diffuse hair loss radiating from the top of the head,” according to Harvard Health. “A woman's hairline rarely recedes, and women rarely become bald.” Although it’s unlikely that a woman will completely lose all of her hair due to androgenetic alopecia, it is still a devastating experience.

2. Aging and Hormones

As women age, hormone levels drastically rise and fall. Research suggests that hair loss during menopause is due to a hormonal imbalance. According to Healthline, “when the levels of estrogen and progesterone drop, hair grows more slowly and becomes much thinner.” Simultaneously, when those two hormones’ levels go down, androgen levels rise. The androgen hormone causes hair follicles to shrink, thus “resulting in hair loss on the head”.

3. Pregnancy

Telogen effluvium is the excessive shedding of hair that occurs one to five months following pregnancy,” according to the American Pregnancy Association. Following pregnancy, this condition is actually fairly common as it affects between 40 and 50% of women. Luckily, this type of hair loss is only temporary. However, this occurrence can be incredibly emotional for women, especially if postpartum depression is present. Though hair will grow back, it is still a good idea to speak with a medical professional to discuss hair-growth-enhancement options.

4. Thyroid Disorders

Telogen effluvium isn’t only connected to pregnancy, but is also apparent in people who are diagnosed with thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. The difference is that after pregnancy, the hormone levels usually begin to go back to their normal state, thus going back to the body’s normal hair growth cycle. Until the thyroid disorder is diagnosed and treated, hair loss will persist. Even upon taking medications for any thyroid conditions, hair loss/thinning can still occur, since thyroid disorders are generally incurable. However, this type of hair loss can be treated.

5. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS is a hormonal disorder that enlarges the ovaries and causes cysts to grow on them. Because of these hormonal imbalances, excessive testosterone and its chemical derivative, DHT, can cause scalp hair to fall out. In combination with treating PCOS, regenerative hair enhancement therapies can be very beneficial to those who are suffering from the disorder.

Grow Your Hair Back- Naturally

A fairly recent breakthrough in hair loss treatment is currently making headlines everywhere: Regenerative Medicine Hair Loss Therapy, specifically PRP Therapy.

“Because hair follicles naturally go through a period where they shut down to rejuvenate, it is thought that the PRP process helps to stimulate inactive follicles to open up shop again,” according to Laser Clinique and P. Alexander Ataii, MD in San Diego, CA. “Because of the relationship between women, aging, and changes in hormonal levels PRP may help to overcome Female Pattern Hair Loss by reactivating hair follicles.

Regeneris Medical offers PRP Therapy in combination with Stromal Vascular Fraction (SVF) to treat hair loss. SVF is a method used to extract adult adipose (fat) stem cells from your own body. Mesenchymal stem cells are extracted from the tissue, which are then incubated. The result is injected directly into areas of concern. Once these stem cells are administered, they have the ability to repair and re-activate dormant follicles, forming new cells of mesenchymal origin.

Take a look at these beautiful results:

P-Stem: 6 Reasons Forego Traditional ED Medications and Treatments

Not being able to sexually perform in bed can be a traumatic experience for some men. One of life’s greatest pleasures is intimacy, and creating an exciting experience for both your partner and yourself. Unfortunately, erectile dysfunction (ED) can ruin the moment. Although there have been many products on the market to treat the condition, there can also be many side effects of ED medications and treatments. These reactions range from being an everyday annoyance, to being detrimental to quality of life. We've compiled a list of side effects of ED medications and treatments for your awareness, in which we'll then offer you a more natural and alternative procedure with several major potential benefits.

The Side Effects

1. Headaches and Body Pain

We all wish we could have our own personal masseuse, but feeling like you constantly need one to follow you around all day could become a problem. According to Healthline, headaches and body pains are common side effects of ED medications-the sudden change in blood flow from the increased levels of nitric oxide causes the headaches”. Switching medications won’t be of any help either, since this is a common side effect of all brands.

2. Dizziness

This same increase in nitric oxide that can cause aches and pains can also cause dizziness. Although it’s often non-threatening, it can significantly interfere with one’s everyday life. Much less frequently do these medications sometimes cause fainting.

3. Congestion and Sniffling

Reaching for the tissue box more often, even when you don’t have allergies? This could be due to ED medications. Again, this is also due to the nitric oxide in the products. These symptoms may eventually go away, but can cause disturbances in everyday activities.

4. Digestive Issues

You may have stopped having bedroom troubles, but you may find yourself having more bathroom troubles if you’re taking any ED medications. Both indigestion and diarrhea can both be side effects of these treatments. Unfortunately, this in turn may even cause more bedroom issues.

5. Flushes

Flushes are temporary periods of redness of the skin.” These blotchy red patches can show up any time on the body. Flushes are not necessarily harmful, but they can be an annoyance and embarrassing. Also, they are more likely to occur when eating spicy food, drinking alcohol, or being outside in warm weather.

6. Lumpiness, Nodules, and Skin Necrosis (with Hyaluronic Acid fillers)

That’s right, HA fillers such as Juvederm, Hydrelle, and Restylane can all cause these side effects. Although the lumpiness and nodules can eventually go away, it can take up to 6 months. If an afflicted patient wants to remove these issues right away, they often have to shell out more cash for the treatments. Skin necrosis is an even bigger issue–– this is when the tissues in the penis die and must be surgically removed.

P-Stem: Huh? What Side Effects?

Much like the P-Shot, the P-Stem treatment utilizes your own platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to effectively treat ED. PRP is incredibly rich in growth factors which can stimulate the growth of new tissue when injected into problem areas. These growth factors work to rejuvenate, improve functionality, and boost sensation all within the penis.

Unlike traditional treatments (like the ones listed above), the P-Stem treatment is an incredibly safe procedure that poses no risks on the patient’s health. Because we are simply utilizing and exploiting the healing abilities of your own body, there is no risk of rejection or infection.

Several potential benefits of the P-Stem include:

  • Increased penis size
  • Heightened sensitivity
  • Increased circulation
  • Strengthen and straighten the penis

The Human Ken Doll: How Unnatural Anti-Aging Fillers Can Yield Unnatural Results

One of the biggest fears of having any anti-aging treatment done is the thought that one may look unnatural after the fact. However, that worry doesn’t exist for 33 year old Rodrigo Alves. Alves, who just recently received his 51st cosmetic procedure, has been offered a Guinness World Record for being an individual to have the “Most Cosmetic Procedures” in the world, having spent nearly $470,000 on cosmetic procedures alone. You may also recognize Alves by a different name– The Human Ken Doll. The reason being? Well...just take a look for yourself…

As you can see, Alves looks incredibly unnatural, almost to the point where fillers and surgeries have disfigured his face. However, he has a different take on his situation...

“I'm just afraid to get old because I started too late,” says Alves. “I want my youth to last longer, I'm never going to get old and every new year I'm looking better than I was the year before.”

We want to preface this with stating that there is absolutely nothing wrong about aging. With age comes wisdom and experience. However- you also have the ability to still feel young at heart, AND match that with your appearance. The greatest part?: Your body holds the ability to turn back the clock by regenerating skin cells and increasing facial volume. Regeneris Medical can help you regain a natural and youthful look with our safe and minimally invasive protocols, just by using your own body’s regenerative abilities.

We at Regeneris Medical can’t help but think that Rodrigo Alves could have looked much more natural, aged beautifully, and significantly decreased his health risks had he opted for a more natural route with us using our regenerative anti-aging protocols.

The Dangers of Fillers

There are several risks associated with getting traditional fillers. One risk being that there is the risk of having an allergic reaction. Intense swelling and itching around the injected site is possible. This essentially means that the body is rejecting the fillers, which can be a very painful experience.

Another risk is the chance that fillers can sometimes cause tiny bumps to form under the skin where they were injected. This can be from the injector administering the filler too superficially, or unevenly. Unfortunately, to fix this, one has to make another appointment with his/her provider, or wait until the filler is totally gone (which could take up to 6 months). According to Web MD, “in some cases, those bumps may be permanent. And sometimes, a bluish skin discoloration known as the Tyndall effect happens.” Not only that, but “the color change can last for several months, but there are treatments available. In very rare cases, skin cells may die if the wrinkle fillers are not used properly.”

Alves has been lucky that he has not had any of these side effects...yet. Unfortunately for the Human Ken Doll, he still has a high risk of having chronic lymphoplasmacytic inflammatory reactions (chronic inflammation of plasma and lymphocyte cells) or classic foreign body-type granulomatous reactions (when one’s body rejects foreign materials that are within the body).

Age Naturally

If only Alves knew his own body could nourish his skin and age gracefully just by using his own body’s resources. Yes, hidden within your body is the fountain of youth, and Regeneris is here to help you find it. The body contains two vital components to regeneration: 1) Platelet-Rich Plasma, and 2) Autologous (from the patient's own body) Adipose (fat) derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells (also known as MSCs). The increased concentration of growth factors in the PRP and activation of MSCs work to naturally rejuvenate the entire face, as opposed to more traditional treatments that target individual areas.

There are several potential benefits to our regenerative therapies, such as…

• Long-lasting, natural results

• Minimally invasive, non-surgical

• Little to no downtime

• Uses your body's own resources

• Advanced stem cell technologies

• No allergy risk

Our protocols provide patients with a more genuine anti-aging route. These treatments have shown promising results that allow patients to reclaim their youth with their bodies own healing powers, rather than with chemical-filled injections or invasive surgeries. By using your body’s own materials, you truly achieve a natural look.

STRAAND: Regeneris Medical Joins Regenerative Hair Growth Study

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEcHDI8t0ac&w=560&h=315]

Regeneris Medical has received independent internal review board (IRB) approval and ClincalTrials.gov unique identifier to commence patient enrollment in its clinical study of Stromal Tissue cell-enRiched treatment of Androgenic Alopecia via Novel Deployment (STRAAND). This study is designed to see the effects of stem cells from fat in stimulating hair growth.

Why Study Hair Loss?

Hair Loss can be a devastating condition to those who have it. It affects up to 70% of men and 40% of women with 95% of hair loss being most commonly due to Male Pattern Baldness and Female Pattern Hair Loss.

Though hair loss affects both sexes, finding the root reason of it is very different between men and women. MPB is easier to detect, as it is usually caused by a byproduct of testosterone metabolism called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which minimizes hair follicles and incites balding. The cause of FPHL is more complex to diagnose, as there are more possibilities as to why female patients lose hair. Thus, female patients will undergo further diagnostic work up and analyzation.

The primary mechanism for hair loss has not yet been clearly established.” When suffering from the condition, both men and women show shrinkage of the hair follicle. Some studies have suggested that the number of current stem cells inhabiting the scalp remains persistent, “but the conversion of stem cells to the progenitor cells [cells that can identify and differentiate between different types of cells] required for follicle regrowth and cycling is reduced in balding patients.  Efforts to assist in the regeneration of the hair follicle may induce a more robust and stronger recycling of the hair follicle.”

STRAAND Study Protocol and Benefits

The protocol of the STRAAND study involves taking fat from the patient’s abdomen, emulsifying it and separating the stem and stromal cells, and then mixing it with the patient’s own plasma which has been spun down to concentrate and exploit the platelets and their growth factors. This mixture is injected into the scalp and the results monitored.

The official STRAAND study website lists multiple potential benefits participants may expect...

  • Possible access to and care from leading doctors and researchers.
  • Reduced cost for regenerative therapy study treatment.
  • The use of the existing biocellular regenerative protocol has been successfully employed for more than 10 years in plastic surgery, pain management, and orthopedic and musculoskeletal injuries; and more than 20 years within aesthetic & reconstructive procedures by cosmetic plastic surgeons. The purpose of this controlled study is to determine whether cell-enriched biocellular targeted placement is equal to, or better than, other regenerative therapies that are not cell-enriched.
  • The potential benefits of stromal vascular fraction deployment for eligible patients may include improvement in certain chronic degenerative diseases. Although some benefits often occur, some patients will experience all of them, some will experience some of them and some patients will not experience any of them. Also, the degree of benefit varies from one patient to another.
  • Contribute to research that may improve the lives of others.

The Investigators

Our very own Dr. Ryan Welter has been selected to be one of the principal investigators of the STRAAND study. The CEO and Medical Director of Regeneris Medical, Dr. Welter obtained his doctorate in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Oklahoma State University and his M.D. from the University of Oklahoma. He completed his residency at Brown University Medical School, where he now serves as Clinical Associate Professor. In 2002, Dr. Welter founded Tristan Medical, which has grown to be one of the largest providers of primary, urgent, and occupational health care in Southeastern Massachusetts, serving over 70,000 patients a year. In 2005, Dr. Welter began a successful hair restoration practice and founded the New England Center for Hair Restoration, creating a state-of-the-art operating suite designed exclusively for accommodating hair transplant surgery.

Other principal investigators in this study include Ken L. Williams Jr., DO, FISHRS, hair restoration surgeon and founder of the Irvine Institute of Medicine and Cosmetic Surgery-Orange County Hair Restoration, and author of the international recognized textbook, Hair Transplant 360 – Follicular Unit Extraction. Eminent plastic surgeon and regenerative researcher, Robert Alexander, MD, DMD, FICS, of Bitterroot Aesthetic & Reconstructive Surgery in Stevensville, Montana is the co-investigator of this one-of-its-kind stem/stromal cell study for hair loss in men and women.
