Studies tell us that some types of hair loss conditions are hereditary. However, there are steps that you can take to slow the process and increase hair health. Here are some of our best tips for keeping your beautiful, full locks well into your golden years.

1. Eat more wild salmon

Increasing your intake of foods high in protein is one of the best ways to keep your hair healthy. Enjoy a salmon salad or tuna on crackers to ensure that you are taking in the protein and omega 3 fatty acids that are essential nutrients for your hair.

2. Soak your hair in green tea

The antioxidants found in green tea are powerful stimulants for strong and healthy hair. Brew a batch of tea (2-3 tea bags), let the tea cool and pour it over your hair. Leave the tea in your hair for at least one hour and then rinse with warm water.

3. Reduce stress

Improving your stress levels is always a good idea for your overall health, but especially for preventing hair loss. Use an app like Headspace to practice meditating, take a warm bubble bath at home or go for an evening walk to unwind at the end of the day. Your hair will thank you.

4. Take a supplement

Stores like Target and CVS carry a large variety of inexpensive supplement options for improving hair health: biotin, vitamin B, vitamin C, zinc and multivitamins are all good options. Taking a supplement daily can be a great step towards preventative hair health.

5. Avoid heat and chemicals

We all know that extensive amounts of heat from blow dryers and curling irons causes severe damage to your hair, but what about hair dye? Harsh chemicals from salon treatments and dyes can strip your hair of its natural protective coating, increasing your likelihood of hair loss. Avoid these treatments whenever possible, and be sure to use a deep conditioner at least once per week.

6. Ask your doctor

Your doctor may be able to prescribe you medications to prevent hair loss that are stronger than over the counter options. This could include medications like Minoxidil (a topical treatment) or Finasteride (a prescription drug).

7. Consider PRP injections

PRP injections are a great non-surgical option for keeping your hair thick and healthy. PRP injections involve a physician drawing the patient's blood, enriching it with platelets, and reinjecting it into the patient’s scalp. This process stimulates the patient’s hair growth through an easy, non invasive procedure.

8. Quit smoking

Studies show that hair loss (and overall health) is significantly worse for people who smoke. Quitting smoking is an excellent step towards preventing hair loss.
